Commit Cycle: October 11

Men

Kenny Brooks

Forward
Tri-City Storm (USHL)
6'2", 195 pounds
Las Vegas, NV
Class of 2012
DOB 12/11/1991

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

10/7  at Dubuque              L 2-5  0   0   0   0 [box score]
10/8  at Des Moines           L 1-3  0   0   0   0 [box score]

Brooks had three shots in the Friday game and was a +1, which can be hard to do when your team loses by three...he was on for the Storm taking a 1-0 lead 7:44 into the game, but also for Dubuque's power play goal to go ahead 3-2 with 5:27 left...Brooks had a blank stat line in the loss to Des Moines as the Storm dropped to 1-2-0.

David Glen

Center
Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL)
6'0", 175 pounds
Fort Saskatchewan, AB
Class of 2012
DOB 2/14/1991

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

10/5  vs. Fort McMurray       W 2-0  1   0   1   0 [box score]
10/8  vs. Calgary             W 5-3  1   0   1   0 [box score]

Glen polished off a tight win last Wednesday with an empty-netter...however, his goal against Calgary 1:11 into the second period was of much greater significance, as it held as the eventual winner...the Saints are off to arguably the best start of any PSU commit's squad with a 9-1-1 record, good for first place in the AJHL's North Division.

Luke Juha

Defenseman
Vernon Vipers (BCHL)
5'11", 180 pounds
Mississauga, ON
Class of 2012
DOB 3/9/1993

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

10/5  vs. Westside            W 2-0  0   0   0   0 [box score]
10/7  vs. Chilliwack          W 4-1  0   1   1   2 [box score]
10/8  at Merritt              W 3-2  0   1   1   0 [box score]

While Juha was stat-free last Wednesday, it certainly wasn't for lack of opportunity... according to vipersdiehardfan blog, "Juha with a long pass up ice tried hitting Vipers captain, Patrick McGillis for the breakaway just thirty five seconds into the contest but McGillis couldnt keep up to the puck"...in the second period, "Juha's point shot beat Racine but went off the post as the Vipers come very close to opening the scoring"...he picked up his first BCHL point on Friday night, on a power play with 2:31 left and earned the game's second star, in large part because "he looked really good without the puck"...his assist against Merritt was on the overtime winner.

Reed Linaker

Center
St. Albert Steel (AJHL)
5'9", 165 pounds
Edmonton, AB
Class of 2012
DOB 11/4/1991

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

10/7  at Canmore              W 4-3  1   3   4   2 [box score]
10/8  at Okotoks              L 2-4  0   0   0   0 [box score]
10/9  at Calgary              L 2-6  0   1   1   0 [box score]

The Steel picked up a rare win Friday night, thanks in no small part to Linaker's having a hand in all four of his team's goals...he had a shorthanded assist, a goal and an assist on the power play, and an even-strength assist...Linaker added a late-first-period assist Sunday and now sits 20th in the league scoring race despite playing for a last-place team.

Curtis Loik

Forward
Penticton Vees (BCHL)
6'1", 205 pounds
North Vancouver, BC
Class of 2012
DOB 4/23/1993

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

10/5  vs. Merritt             W 6-1  0   0   0   2 [box score]
10/7  at Prince George        W 5-2  0   1   1   0 [box score]
10/8  at Prince George        L 4-5  0   0   0   4 [box score]

Loik's penalty in Wednesday's win was an mid-second period roughing minor...the assist in the first Prince George game was on an empty-net goal, but hey, they all count...neither of his penalties in the overtime loss to the Spruce Kings the next day ultimately hurt the team.

Eamon McAdam

Goaltender
Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL)
6'2", 180 pounds
Perkasie, PA
Class of 2013
DOB 9/24/1994

Date  Opponent               Score SA GA  Sv% GAA

10/7  at Lincoln             W 4-3 --  -  --- ---  [box score]
10/8  at Sioux Falls         L 2-3 --  -  --- ---  [box score]

Jay Williams got the call against Lincoln, then again in the Black Hawks' shootout loss against Sioux Falls...McAdam as yet to play in the young season.

Jonathan Milley

Right Wing
Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL)
6'4", 220 pounds
Ottawa, ON
Class of 2012
DOB 5/8/1991

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

10/7  vs. Cumberland          W 3-0  -   -   -   - [box score]
10/9  vs. Ottawa              L 2-3  -   -   -   - [box score]

The defending national champs are still limping without Milley, but it is in a forward direction...after a 1-3-1 start, the PLKs have gone 5-3-0 since to right the ship somewhat, and now sit in third place in the Yzerman Division, just three points out of first.

Matt Skoff

Goalie
Sioux City Musketeers (USHL)
6'0", 186 pounds
McKees Rocks, PA
Class of 2012
DOB 7/23/1991

Date  Opponent               Score SA GA  Sv% GAA

10/8  vs. Fargo              W 5-2 20  2 .900 2.00 [box score]
10/9  at Omaha               L 1-2 34  2 .941 2.07 [box score]

Against Fargo, Skoff faced his lowest shot total in three games this season and collected his only win...he suffered the opposite fate the next say, facing 70 percent more rubber, letting the same number through, but losing...he's also lost a 1-0 decision so far this season...still, his goals against and save percentage rank third and fourth in the league, first among goalies who have played three games.

Connor Varley

Defenseman
Des Moines Buccaneers (USHL)
6'0", 190 pounds
Lansdale, PA
Class of 2013
DOB 6/3/1992

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM

10/7  at Green Bay            L 3-5  1   0   1   0 [box score]
10/8  vs. Tri-City            W 3-1  0   0   0   0 [box score]

Unfortunately, Varley's goal Friday served largely as window dressing, providing the final marker of the game with 1:10 left...he was on the ice for five of the eight goals scored in that game...Varley was a +1 in the win over Brooks' Storm.

Mark Yanis

Defenseman
Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL)

10/8  at Chicago              L 3-6  0   0   0   7 [box score]

Yanis' penalty minutes Friday came on a pair of high sticking minors, the first of which was 1:21 in and led to the first goal of the game by Cedar Rapids on the power play...while five of his seven penalty minutes against Chicago came via a fight, Yanis continues to take a concerning number of penalties.

10/9  vs. Edge School         L 1-3  0   1   1   0 [box score]

NSA began its Junior Women's Hockey League schedule over the weekend with five games at Harvard and Northeastern, and the Mountaineers' 2-3-0 record has them in fourth in the league's East Division...while stats for specific games are unavailable (I'd be able to do it if they weren't always grinding out two per day!), I can report that Laurenzi had 0 goals and 5 assists for the weekend, along with 2 penalty minutes, 14 shots and a +1 rating.

  2. I hope they do at some point, they're obviously one of the great programs in the ACHA. That said, it's usually about more than "having fans." I can't speak to the specifics of ISU's situation, but I know that at PSU we always had the fans, but Title IX was always an issue and we had to start a women's program along with the men's. It's hard to make money on college hockey, even with popular teams, and especially when a women's program is involved and many athletic departments aren't willing to take on the expense right now. Finally, they technically probably COULD use their current facility, but in light of what I just said, they'd probably want a new one to give themselves more seats to sell and some luxury suites (it would also help with recruiting and the on-ice product, obviously).

Like I said, I don't know ISU's specific situation, but those were always the stumbling blocks at PSU.
