M Results/Season, 1909 -

The following is TYT's attempt at a list of every game in the history of Penn State men's hockey.

First, a word about methodology. Generally speaking, I've used the archives of The Daily Collegian as my first-choice source and have constructed this page independently, through original research. There are numerous disagreements from different sources on things like opponents, scores and dates over the years, but in those cases, I tend to trust the Collegian articles written within days of the games above other accounts.

Unfortunately, there are gaps in the Collegian's coverage, particularly around breaks in PSU's academic calendar and during the early years of the Icers program. In those cases, I've filled in games using the archives of La Vie (Penn State's yearbook) and the official game-by-game results of the team, which were compiled by Hockey Management Association alumnus Rich Ginel and provided to TYT by Hall of Famer Rodney Martin. Special thanks are due both of them, as this page would not be possible without their contributions.

(Here are a couple of posts where I publicly went through my process for the 1937-1947 era, if you're interested: Breakout Past: La Vie of Penn State Hockey (Part I) // Breakout Past: La Vie of Penn State Hockey (Part II))

For more recent seasons, roughly 1996 to the present, I've relied on my personal collection of Icers programs (one of the perks of being a former program editor in HMA) and on pennstatehockey.com (still another Rodney Martin contribution to this project), which keeps schedules and results from 2001 through 2012.

The result of all this is that my records disagree with the official team won-loss records in some places. In 1986-1987, for example, the team reports a record of 24-9-1, while my research and Ginel's both revealed an extra loss and a total record of 24-10-1. In 1982-1983, Ginel is missing results for a pair of late-season games at Kent State, but my research was able to identify those as wins, plus reverse the result of the December 10, 1982 game against Buffalo State that was incorrectly called a win. In other cases, I believe the team's stated record is more accurate, such as in the Icers' inaugural 1971-1972 season, when research falls two wins short of the stated 13-6-0. In all cases, I've stated "my" record in each season's header, then noted any discrepancies at the bottom. Fortunately, everyone's in agreement most of the time, including for every season since that 1986-1987 issue.

I won't go through every example, but suffice it to say that I believe I can substantiate everything I've done below. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions in that regard!

PS. The team pictures are still a work in progress. The ones posted here are from La Vie, but my hope is to include as many as I can find, as well as a few action shots representative of different periods in team history.

PPS. I still plan on adding links to Daily Collegian recaps to the game results from 2001-2010 and links to TYT posts for 2010-present. This, however, is a fairly intensive process and I wanted to get the data itself online as soon as possible.

NOTE: PSU defeated a squad of State College Area High School players and JV team members 7-5 on March 19, 1977 at the Ice Pavilion in a game not counted on the team's record. The March 21, 1977 Daily Collegian reported the team's final record as 14-6-2, which seems to be more accurate than the officially-kept 14-6-1, as the ties against Pitt and Navy are both verified by multiple sources.

3/21/1981 vs. Philadelphia Jr. Flyers, W 8-5

NOTE: The team reports a record of 24-6-0, while Ginel's spreadsheet only includes 28 games. I was able to identify a missing game 29, the 4-1 win over Erie CC on December 20, 1980. An early-season exhibition win over NCAA DIII Cortland State may explain the difference, but no score or date is available.

NOTE: Officially, PSU's first national champs were 24-15-1, while the Collegian reported a final record of 23-15-1. There may have been an unreported win over winter break that would account for a 23rd win.

NOTE: This slate is one win shy of the official 20-11-2. If there is an extra win missing, it's likely to have taken place after February 17th, as the Daily Collegian's reporting through that date is consistent with what is presented here.

* International Collegiate Hockey League game

NOTE: Officially, this team was 17-16-3 (9-2-3 ICHL). I believe the difference in the ICHL records may be due to the home game against St. Bonaventure on November 13, 1985. The Bonnies won in overtime, but the February 10, 1986 Collegian reported that by rule, ICHL games did not include overtime. As a result, I believe that the loss to SBU, an ICHL game, was "converted" to a tie after the fact, which of course changes the 9-3-2 record to 9-2-3. That, of course, doesn't explain the missing tie and the added win on the overall record.
