Commit Cycle: Tier I/II 19U Girls Nationals Wrap-Up

For many of Penn State's women's recruits, the culmination of their 2011-2012 seasons was at the USA Hockey Tier I 19U National Championships in Marlborough, MA from March 28th through April 1st (one exception was Hannah Hoenshell, whose Alliance Bulldogs hosted the Tier II tournament in Frisco, TX over the same dates). To mark the season finale of the women's half of Commit Cycle, here's a rundown of how each fared at nationals.

Jeanette Bateman

Forward
Colorado Select 19U
5'6", 125 pounds
Greeley, CO
Class of 2012
DOB 5/1/1994

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

3/28  vs. Rice Knights        W 3-2  0   0   0   0 [box score]
3/29  vs. Little Caesars      L 0-7  0   0   0   0 [box score]
3/30  vs. Madison Capitols    L 3-5  0   0   0   0 [box score]

Colorado ended a disappointing season with an exit from the tournament following the pool round... the obvious highlight of Bateman and crew's run was Katie McGovern's overtime goal to lift the Select over Rice in their opener.

Jill Holdcroft

Stephanie Walkom

Defender
Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 19U

Moon Township, PA
Class of 2012
DOB 6/21/1994

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

3/28  vs. Chicago Mission     L 1-4  0   0   0   0 [box score]
3/29  vs. MN Thoroughbreds    L 4-5  0   0   0   0 [box score]
3/30  vs. New Jersey Rockets  L 2-4  0   0   0   0 [box score]

The Pens also made a quick exit from the tournament... however, Holdcroft and Kern provided a brief moment where things might have turned out completely differently with some added puck luck during the Minnesota game... Pittsburgh fell in a 3-0 hole after the first period, but Kern's apple on a Morgan Blank goal got her team on the board... Holdcroft finished the rally on her goal, which tied the game with 12:25 remaining... however, the Thoroughbreds scored twice more in short order, providing the margin of defeat.

Emily Laurenzi

Forward
National Sports Academy
5'5", 125 pounds
Townsend, DE
Class of 2012
DOB 1993

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

3/28  vs. Anaheim Lady Ducks  W 9-1  0   0   0   0 [box score]
3/29  vs. East Coast Wizards  W 7-2  1   0   1   2 [box score]
3/30  vs. Shattuck St. Mary's L 1-4  0   0   0   0 [box score]
3/31  vs. Chicago Mission     L 1-2  0   0   0   0 [box score]

Laurenzi was one of two PSU recruits to make it to the Tier I quarterfinals, before her NSA squad bowed out against Chicago, the eventual runners-up... the Mountaineers were doomed to that tough quarterfinal draw by a loss to an equally tough Shattuck team, despite two blowout wins to start their run.

Hannah Hoenshell

Forward
Alliance Bulldogs 19U
5'3", 119 pounds
Plano, TX
Class of 2012
DOB 12/30/1993

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

3/28  vs. Keweenaw Storm      W 3-1  2   1   3   0 [box score]
3/29  vs. Mid-Fairfield CT    W 4-2  2   2   4   0 [box score]
3/30  vs. Cape Cod Sharks     W 11-1 4   3   7   0 [box score]
3/31  vs. Chazy Lady Flyers   W 5-1  0   4   4   0 [box score]
3/31  vs. Mid-Fairfield CT    W 8-2  4   1   5   0 [box score]
4/1   vs. Colorado Tigers     W 5-2  0   1   1   0 [box score]

No, statistics don't tell the whole story - except when they do... Hoenshell was flat-out dominant in leading the Bulldogs to the Tier II national championship... she had a hand in literally 2/3 of the team's goals during the tournament (24 of 36 to be precise)... Alliance only faced one situation remotely resembling a challenge, during their second pool game against the Mid-Fairfield CT Stars... after the Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead, the Stars answered with two of their own before the first intermission, and the level score held until the final period, when Hoenshell popped in her two goals for the final margin.

Taylor McGee

Defender
Connecticut Polar Bears 19U / Taft School (Prep)
Height/weight unknown
Pearl River, NY
Class of 2012
DOB 2/8/1994

Date  Opponent                Score  G   A Pts PIM
--------------------------------------------------------------

3/28  vs. Washington Pride    W 7-5  1   1   2   2 [box score]
3/29  vs. Assabet Valley      L 0-3  0   0   0   0 [box score]
3/30  vs. Honeybaked          L 2-3  0   0   0   0 [box score]
3/31  vs. Shattuck St. Mary's L 1-3  0   0   0   0 [box score]

Despite dropping two of three pool games, the Bears benefited from the tournament's 3-2-1-0 point system, as their shootout loss to Honeybaked gave out just enough credit to sneak into fourth place in the National Division and advance to the quarterfinals... once there though, they suffered the same fate as Laurenzi and NSA - elimination at the hands of a good opponent.

3/30  vs. CT Polar Bears      W 3-2  0   0   0   2 [box score]

Much like the Pens Elite girls, it's pretty easy to see how things could have gone very differently for Pardoski, Shaw and Honeybaked... following a one-goal loss to eventual champion Assabet that was 4:49 away from overtime (and a guaranteed standings point), Honeybaked held a 3-1 lead on Washington entering the third period before a natural hat trick from Boston College-bound Haley Skarupa flipped the score... the team closed with a win, but because it was in a shootout, only two points were awarded instead of three... Honeybaked was two points shy of advancing.
