Men's Jersey Countdown: #1 P.J. Musico

Junior - Goaltender - 6'1" - 198 pounds - Orange, CA

P.J. Musico, most observers assume, has a tough road ahead of him with highly-esteemed and younger goalies Eamon McAdam and Matt Skoff both in the program. But even a cursory look at Musico's history makes it clear that he shouldn't be written off. As an Icers freshman in 2011-12, he stepped on to a team including returning starter Matt Madrazo and respected recruit Tim Carr - and proceeded to lead PSU in every major goaltending category, including minutes, wins, save percentage and goals against average. Last season, with Skoff in the fold, Musico took control of the crease early on and delivered several signature performances. On October 12th against AIC, his 32 saves helped a 4-3 overtime win that was Penn State's first victory of the NCAA era, and he followed up two weeks later with the Nittany Lions' first NCAA shutout, at Army on October 26th. Most impressively, Musico's 40-save, first-star effort in a 3-2 win over RIT in front of more than 10,000 orange-clad Tigers supporters on October 20th announced PSU as a threat in varsity year one.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #2 Connor Varley

Sophomore - Defenseman - 5'11" - 195 pounds - Lansdale, PA

Underappreciated Connor Varley, in many ways, was the glue that held Penn State's often-shorthanded defensive corps together last season. He was the only Nittany Lion blueliner to appear in all 27 NCAA games - and one of just four players on the team as a whole - with his 12 points in those games leading the unit. Varley's offensive capabilities were already known prior to his beginning at PSU thanks to his exploits with the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers and the BCHL's Alberni Valley Bulldogs, but he surprised with his defensive strength, particularly as 2012-13 proceeded. His 27 shot blocks were a team high, and despite his unimposing size, Varley developed into someone who won far more puck battles than he lost by the end of the year. The righty was a big-game player as well, with five of his 12 points coming against Air Force (one goal and one assist on November 10th), Ohio State, Vermont and Michigan State (one assist each).

Men's Jersey Countdown: #3 Patrick Koudys

Redshirt Junior - Defenseman - 6'3" - 210 pounds - Smithville, ON

Patrick Koudys has been somewhere no Nittany Lions player - not even former Minnesota Golden Gopher Max Gardiner - has been: the NCAA Tournament. He did so on a 20-13-5 RPI team in 2010-11, and although it was a quick trip (the Engineers were blanked by North Dakota in the regional semifinal round), Koudys' experiences as a key member of a good team should prove valuable to what is still a young PSU squad. The 2009-10 teammate of Luke Juha with the CCHL's Burlington Cougars parlayed his freshman success into being picked by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, but he elected to transfer after seeing his playing time cut as a sophomore. Koudys spent his sit-out year with the USHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks and put up a goal and 14 assists in 64 games. More importantly, he was a vital part of the league's second-stingiest defense, as the Jacks only allowed 2.73 goals per game en route to a playoff bid after finishing dead last in the Eastern Conference during the season before Koudys' arrival.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #4 Luke Juha

Sophomore - Defenseman - 5'11" - 194 pounds - Mississauga, ON

In a sense, a healthy Luke Juha on the Nittany Lions in 2013-14 will be similar to the addition of an extra five-star recruit, as he missed most of the second half of his freshman season with an abdominal injury. And, much like a recruit, it's almost certain that he'll have the shoulder chip of a guy eager to prove himself, particularly since he also missed most of 2011-12 with the BCHL's Vernon Vipers due to injury. Juha, however, is even better than a recruit, since he's already shown flashes of his collegiate potential in the games played before he went out. The unflappable left-handed puck mover pumped home a second-period goal on November 10th versus Air Force that held up as the winner in arguably PSU's biggest NCAA victory to that point. Five of his six assists came in his last five contests: one against Robert Morris on December 15th, two in the Three Rivers Classic consolation game triumph over Ohio State and two more at Connecticut on January 4th. Juha is among Penn State's most adaptable blueliners - he partnered with six different defensemen more than once last year.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #5 Mark Yanis

Sophomore - Defenseman - 6'3" - 207 pounds - Grosse Pointe Woods, MI

While Penn State hockey fans frequently discuss the pro prospects of draft picks like Eamon McAdam and Max Gardiner, don't be surprised if Mark Yanis winds up as the Nittany Lions' first NHLer, via free agency. He has made large developmental strides over the last couple seasons, and despite being sidelined for a large chunk of 2012-13 with a broken ankle, he managed nine points in 15 NCAA games - his 0.6 points per game trailed only Gardiner, Casey Bailey, David Glen, Taylor Holstrom and Jonathan Milley on the team. That stat includes an early second period power play bomb that pulled Penn State within 2-1 at Michigan State on January 26th, a game the Lions went on to win 3-2. Yanis' imposing presence on the blueline and back into his zone is his calling card though, and he's so effective in his traditional role that PSU allowed nearly an entire goal more per game during his absence (3.50 without him, 2.53 with him). With the Muskegon Lumberjacks alumnus (and others who were injured last season) back full time, along with the addition of guys like McAdam and Mike Williamson, Penn State could be one of the nation's finest defensive teams.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #6 Peter Sweetland

Junior - Defenseman - 6'2" - 205 pounds - Newtown, PA

When discussing Penn State's top offensive defensemen, it's common to hear the names Connor Varley, Luke Juha, Mark Yanis and Nate Jensen thrown around. But Peter Sweetland comes up much less often, even though he tied for second in blueliner points (with Yanis and Jensen, behind only Varley) among Nittany Lions in 2012-13, a statistic that includes a goal and an assist against Army on October 26th. The former EJHLer, who spent his last season prior to enrolling at PSU with the Green Mountain Glades, is a quietly effective defender with good size. He has taken just two minor penalties in his entire career to this point, and he also blocked 22 shots as a sophomore while finishing with a +2 rating - basically, the right-handed shot is an asset to any coach's top six. With the Icers in 2011-12, Sweetland scored a first-period power play goal at Ohio on January 28th that held up as the winner in the final ACHA meeting between the storied rivals.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #7 Jacob Friedman

Junior - Forward - 5'9" - 175 pounds - West Bloomfield, MI

Jacob Friedman is one of those players who, above all else, is fun to watch. Although not blessed with great size, the hard worker prefers the high-traffic areas in front of the net and on the walls usually populated by much larger men. A Detroit-area native, Friedman came to Penn State after two seasons with the EJHL's South Shore Kings, the second of which (2010-11) saw him serve as the Kings' captain and put up 61 points to finish tied for sixth in the league in scoring (notably, with current Union forward Max Novak). Unofficially, and along with the since-departed Tim Carr, Friedman was the first commit of the 2011-12 freshman class and therefore of the NCAA era. The 2012-13 Academic All-Big Ten selection particularly likes playing against NCAA Division III Fredonia State. As a freshman, one of his Icers-high five power play goals was instrumental in a stirring come-from-behind win over the Blue Devils on November 5, 2011, and last season he offered a goal and an assist as PSU also took the rematch. In July, Friedman was a member of Team USA for the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Metula, Israel and helped the American squad to a silver medal.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #8 Michael McDonagh

Senior - Forward - 6'2" - 190 pounds - Wilmington, MA

With classmate Matt Madrazo not returning to the Nittany Lions this season, Michael McDonagh stands alone as the last active NCAA men's player enrolled at Penn State prior to September 17, 2010 (Lindsay Reihl holds that distinction on the women's team). And the former prep star at both Phillips Andover and Winchendon School, as with the six "pure Icers" who were seniors last year and against the expectations of some, made himself a valuable member of the squad. He's a net-front specialist with good size who generally centered other do-what-it-takes types (most frequently Michael Longo and Tommy Olcyzk, but also Eric Steinour, George Saad and Jacob Friedman). It was a style that paid off in a big way, as McDonagh was a major reason why PSU had better-than-expected depth last season. He scored the first empty-net goal in the program's modern varsity history on November 10, 2012 against Air Force and skated in 23 of the 27 games Penn State played against NCAA competition.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #9 David Goodwin

Freshman - Forward - 5'10" - 179 pounds - Des Peres, MO

Freshman playmaker David Goodwin is among the latest in a string of mature leaders with underrated talent brought in by Guy Gadowsky during Penn State's foundation-laying NCAA years. As a USHL rookie in 2010-11, he helped the Green Bay Gamblers to the Clark Cup finals, but for most of the last two seasons, he's played for below average teams - and still produced. The Gamblers traded Goodwin to the Sioux City Musketeers early in the 2011-12 season, where he went on to finish third on a 29-30-1 team in scoring despite not being on the roster from the beginning of the year. He was named Sioux City's captain at the beginning of last season, but departed for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders via trade after 18 games. Still, Goodwin wound up among the top scorers on the 25-30-9 Riders with 30 points in 46 games. The St. Louis-area native is part of a burgeoning PSU pipeline from the Show Me State, including Nittany Lions defenseman Joe Lordo and 2015 commit Chase Berger.

Women's Jersey Countdown: #2 Jeanette Bateman

Sophomore - Defender - 5'6" - Greeley, CO

One way to know that Jeanette Bateman is an effective defender is through the test generally applied to offensive linemen in football: she tends to go unnoticed. But effective she is, or she wouldn't have joined Jordin Pardoski, Paige Jahnke and Lindsay Reihl in the group of Penn State blueliners who dressed for every game in 2012-13. In 30 of the last 31, Bateman could be found on the right side of Jahnke, maybe PSU's most effective tandem - they ranked second and third on the team in blocked shots, behind only human waffleboard Micayla Catanzariti. The three-sport athlete in high school was the first player in Penn State's NCAA history with a three-assist game (January 4th against Chatham), and she scored her goal in a win over Sacred Heart on October 20, 2012. Bateman is also an outstanding student. The biomedical engineering major was co-salutatorian at Greeley West High School and is notable as one of several Nittany Lions likely to end up somewhere in medicine following graduation.

Women's Jersey Countdown: #3 Cara Mendelson

Junior - Forward - 5'6" - Pittsburgh, PA

Cara Mendelson didn't play much in 2012-13 - just two games - but there's little doubt that she's an important part of the Nittany Lions' depth. She's adept at playing both forward and defense, a bit of flexibility that allows Josh Brandwene and his staff added security against the inevitabilities of hockey. And it has to be said that with Mendelson in the lineup, PSU did quite well last season: 2-0-0 with a 6-1 win at Sacred Heart on October 20, 2012 and a 4-0 home victory against Division III Chatham on January 5th. The Steel City Selects product spent her freshman season with the Lady Icers and was a key component of an outstanding group of blueliners that helped PSU to the ECWHL regular season championship. She scored her first collegiate goal on October 28, 2011 against California (PA) and was in the lineup for the Lady Icers' stunning upset of NCAA DI's Sacred Heart on January 14, 2012. Mendelson was one of six Lions to earn Academic All-Big Ten accolades last year.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #11 David Glen

Sophomore - Forward - 6'0" - 180 pounds - Fort Saskatchewan, AB

College hockey's publicly-available game information hasn't really evolved to the point where fans, media and bloggers can track the increasingly popular advanced statistics like Corsi and Fenwick. But it's a pretty safe bet that David Glen would fare quite well in those measurements. He's a possession-driving player who, as a freshman, led Penn State in shots with 117, won 58.4 percent of his draws, gained the puck when he didn't have it, kept it when he did, and probably had a healthy proportion of defensive zone starts to boot. All of that was expected from the former Spruce Grove Saints captain when he came to Hockey Valley. What wasn't expected: he became arguably PSU's first varsity-era star player, beginning with his overtime goal on October 13, 2012 to give the Nittany Lions a first NCAA win, over AIC. That was Glen's second of the game, and he went on to score 14 more times to lead the team - including in big wins over Air Force and Vermont. Glen will become an alternate captain this season (replacing the departed George Saad) and he may be the leading candidate to wear the C after Tommy Olczyk graduates.

Women's Jersey Countdown: #4 Jordin Pardoski

Sophomore - Defender - 5'5" - Rochester Hills, MI

Fiery Jordin Pardoski, noted for her pre-game "pep talks" that often resonate from the locker room to the stands, would be an important member of the team based on intangibles alone. However, as it turns out, she's also one of the Nittany Lions' best defensive players, and there is no shortage of statistics to back up that statement: her 10 points last year led Penn State blueliners and she had a -2 rating, best at the position among players who dressed more than half of the time. Pardoski also led the team with 40 penalty minutes, largely a product of her physicality, but that number is more than balanced by the number of puck battles she's won behind her net. She plays with the headiness of a coach's daughter, which makes sense as her father (himself a former player at Michigan and a one-time New Jersey Devils draft pick) coaches the 19U team in the famed Honeybaked program. Pardoski also has a heavy shot from the point - only a handful of Penn State's best offensive players topped her 10.0 shooting percentage in 2012-13.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #12 Dylan Richard

Freshman - Forward - 6'0" - 185 pounds - Sherwood Park, AB

He's not the most heralded of Penn State's freshmen - even from within his own junior team - but don't be surprised if Spruce Grove Saints veteran Dylan Richard (last name pronounced like Maurice and Henri) becomes one of the Nittany Lions' go-to offensive threats in 2013-14. In the AJHL, he averaged 0.80 points per game over 138 games, just a hair behind once-and-again teammate David Glen, PSU's leading goal scorer last year, and his 0.82. In Richard's first full season as a Saint he and Glen won an AJHL championship, and over the following two seasons he emerged as one the circuit's elite players. The honors quickly followed. Richard was selected to the AJHL North Division All-League team last season and was a finalist for the Alberta Old Time Hockey Players Trophy, awarded to the the league MVP. He also joined Team Canada West at the 2012 World Junior A Challenge, but had to settle for silver after dropping the final to Eamon McAdam and Team USA.

Women's Jersey Countdown: #5 Stephanie Walkom

Sophomore - Defender - 5'7" - Moon Township, PA

Stephanie Walkom, voted as the Nittany Lions' most improved player in 2012-13, may stand as the best example of the team's subtle growth from the beginning to the end of the year. She didn't play a single minute during the 2012 half of the schedule, then finally got a chance against NCAA Division III Chatham on January 5th - and fired three shots on goal with a +2 rating. The daughter of NHL referee Stephen Walkom proceeded to play in each of Penn State's final seven games, starting with a 3-3 tie against Lindenwood on February 9th (a game that, if you're not familiar with how it ended, should have been PSU's second conference win). She formed a solid partnership with Lindsay Reihl that contributed to a noticeable uptick in the team's defense, as the Lions allowed 3.14 goals per game during that final stretch of CHA matches after allowing 4.20 in league contests prior to that. Walkom's single best outing may have come on February 22nd at Robert Morris, when she notched four of PSU's 14 blocked shots.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #13 Kenny Brooks

Sophomore - Forward - 6'1" - 195 pounds - Las Vegas, NV

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Kenny Brooks is that he doesn't have to play the way he does. His father, Kirk, owns the USHL's Tri-City Storm and is in the habit of buying other hockey entities related to his son's career. Money talks, and as long as Kenny turned out to be a half-decent player, he was always going to have a roster spot somewhere. But Brooks, to his credit, is all team. The right wing once played an extended stretch on defense for Tri-City when the Storm was shorthanded on the blueline, and he also made a cameo there under similar circumstances in 2012-13 for the Nittany Lions. He's one of Penn State's hardest workers and best playmakers, and can most often be seen on the backcheck or working the corners to set up someone like David Glen. Brooks assisted Glen on the overtime goal that game PSU its first NCAA-era win on October 13, 2012, and he put up a goal and two assists in the sweep of Alabama-Huntsville on February 8th and 9th.

Women's Jersey Countdown: #6 Lindsay Reihl

Graduate Student - Defender - 5'4" - Cheshire, CT

Lindsay Reihl is truly a remarkable player. The fact that she came to Penn State before the Pegula donation announcement and made the jump to the NCAA team is significant enough by itself to make that statement, of course. But it's more than that, because she's far from a mere hanger-on, she's a great defender, and an every-game player who wears an A on her sweater. The coup de grace is the fact that Reihl made herself valuable enough in 2012-13 to be asked back this season as a graduate student. That sets her apart as the only former ACHAer, male or female, with whom PSU's coaches were willing to take advantage of the NCAA's five-in-four rule, which (in this application) allows former members of the ACHA teams to play five total years of college hockey. With the Lady Icers, Reihl was the club's three-time defensive player of the year. She was also, in 2011, a member of the first women's team USA Hockey sent to the World University Games, helping the squad to a fourth-place finish. Just in case you needed more, and as her pursuit of a graduate degree suggests, Reihl is also an outstanding student - she was named a 2012-13 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for carrying a GPA above 3.7.

Junior - Forward - 5'10" - 185 pounds - Long Grove, IL

Second-year captain Tommy Olczyk, not too long ago, was best known to Penn Staters as "dynamic scorer for the Icers" and "guy who gets PSU hockey shoutouts on NBC thanks to his analyst dad." He's become much more than that to us. Hard working on the ice, well spoken off of it. A leader who is always accountable, win or lose. Fantastic academically. In other words, just about the closest thing you'll ever find to "model student-athlete" in real life. While astute observers knew that his impressive scoring production in the ACHA as a freshman (52 points in 31 games, including a couple of highly-memorable performances against Oklahoma) wouldn't carry over to the NCAA level, other important traits have. Olczyk's excellence as a penalty killer was apparent to all from the beginning, and he popped home one of the Nittany Lions' three shorthanded goals in 2012-13, on January 25th against Michigan State. The weekend before that, he assisted on Justin Kirchhevel's eventual game-winning goal against Vermont at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Men's Jersey Countdown: #15 Curtis Loik

Sophomore - Forward - 6'1" - 205 pounds - North Vancouver, BC

One of the leading reasons for Penn State's surprising amount of success in 2012-13 was the unexpected production from the Curtis Loik - David Glen - Kenny Brooks line, with Loik excelling as a grinder next to finisher Glen and playmaker Brooks (though it should be said that all three possess off-the-charts compete levels). Loik's +7 rating was second best on the team, and he was also an effective part of the Nittany Lions' stout penalty kill unit, a role that included an assist on Tommy Olczyk's shorthanded goal against Michigan State on January 25th. While Loik's point totals aren't eye popping, he tends to score in big situations, including in wins over RIT on October 20, 2012 and Ohio State on December 29, 2012. Prior to coming to PSU, he was an important member of one of the best Junior A teams in history, the 2011-12 Penticton Vees. After Loik put up 37 points during a 54-4-2 regular season that included a record 42-game winning streak, the Vees went on to win the RBC Cup (Canadian Junior A national championship) as well as the Fred Page Cup (BCHL playoff title) and the Doyle Cup (Pacific championship) on the way to immortality.

Women's Jersey Countdown: #9 Amy Petersen

Freshman - Forward - 5'4" - Minnetonka, MN

If Penn State wins a CHA title (or more) in the next four years, it's a pretty good bet that Amy Petersen will score a huge game-winning goal on the way. And for a change, new teammates Sarah Nielsen and Paige Jahnke, as well as future teammate Christi Vetter, will be happy about it. In 2011, the Minnetonka High School linemate of fellow freshman Laura Bowman sniped with 39.6 seconds remaining to lift the Skippers to a first-ever Minnesota state championship over Nielsen and Edina. The following year, Petersen scored 6:21 into overtime to topple Vetter and Lakeville North in the state semifinals, and she offered a pair of assists in a 3-0 win over Jahnke's Roseville in the final as an encore. And back in February, the Skippers completed a three-peat, thanks largely to both a Bowman shot that went in off of Petersen's chest to end a marathon six-overtime semifinal against Lakeville North and also a second-period breakaway goal from Petersen that held up as the winner in the championship game against Hill-Murray the next day.
