Tournament formats
1998 - 8 teams grouped into two pools (seeds 1-4-5-8, 2-3-6-7 together). The winner of each pool after round robin games advanced to the championship game, while pool runners-up played a consolation game.
1999 - 10 teams. The bottom four seeds (7 vs. 10 and 8 vs. 9) competed in play-in games, after which the format reverted to 1998, with the 7 vs. 10 winner taking the 7th seed's pool spot and the 8 vs. 9 winner taking the 8th seed's pool spot.
2000-2004 - 12 teams grouped into four pools of three (seeds 1-8-12, 2-7-11, 3-6-10, 4-5-9 together). Winner of each pool after round robin games advanced to semifinals, while pool runners-up competed in 7th and 5th place games. Semifinal losers played in a 3rd place game.
2005-2011 - 16 teams, single elimination. Teams losing in the first round were paired up for consolation games to decide 9th, 11th, 13th and 15th place. In 2005, quarterfinal losers played in 5th and 7th place games, while the semifinal losers played in a 3rd place game. After that season the 5th and 7th place games were eliminated, while the 3rd place game was eliminated following 2006.
2012 - 20 teams, single elimination. Bottom eight seeds played in a first round, after which the winners joined the other 12 teams for a 16-team second round. No consolation games.
