If it is TPegs, I'll stick up for him there and say that he really hasn't inserted himself unnecessarily over the last three years. IMO, it's really been guys like Joe Battista and Guy Gadowsky (and I like and respect both of those men immensely, don't take this any other way) who have sort of bent over backwards to regurgitate the same two TPegs quotes about the arena to make it sound like he was more active than was probably the case. I'm pretty sure he didn't sign off on the electric Zamboni PIA has haha. He's shown up at the big moments and has accepted our thanks, but I disagree with the notion that it was all about him, if that's even who you meant. He could've been a LOT more destructively over-involved for the amount of money he gave.

I won't argue with one thing - things have changed in a lot of ways, even something basic like player interaction, where they're isolated in PIA (separate entrance to the locker area to the ice and back) and not walking through the lobby at Greenberg anymore. Fans are fans, boosters are boosters, media are the media, and those wearing khakis and polos are the athletic department staff. There are some very thick lines drawn around those categories that didn't used to exist. I'm certainly not naive to that, I've been affected by that in a few ways. Others (like a guy who commented below) more drastically, of course.

But the community itself? It's still there, you just have to look a little harder for it. The NCAA men are a huge deal now, but when the arena and general newness hysteria dies down, what will be left are the hardcore hockey people, the parents, and the fringe fans that come and go depending on the opponent or the team's record. NCAA programs have a distinct hockey community among people who treat that team as the number one thing, and it works quite well in those places. It will at PSU too.

If you're missing that old Icers closeness to the team itself, you'll probably never get that from the NCAA men, because yes, it's a business now in a lot of ways. But if that's your thing, get out to an ACHA game, or even (to an extent) the NCAA women, and you'll find a lot of that still in place. I helped Tara Soukup tape her stick last weekend, you don't get much closer than that haha.Kyle Rossihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03988727251887693489noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1327069433246447816.post-36049411272141579092013-10-16T16:32:06.654-04:002013-10-16T16:32:06.654-04:00Thanks Glenn! I quickly added it to my favorites and followed the progress of the long awaited PSU hockey program. Your blog WAS my source of PSU hockey. You produced a comprehensive interesting view of hockey that was not found elsewhere. It was obvious that it was a labor of love for you-that's why it was so good. You will be missed.
Best of luck to you as you begin your career! At one point PSU was different because it was about people and relationships you developed over time. Now like most things that move forward it is about the bottom line. I have been very disappointed in the direction of the off-ice leadership of the program.
